When the metropolitan boroughs were replaced with larger London boroughs in 1965, this borough was split. The core area of Wandsworth (about 11 km²) became part of the London Borough of Wandsworth, along with the former Metropolitan Borough of Battersea, but the areas of Streatham and Clapham (totalling 4km²) became part of the London Borough of Lambeth.

The borough was considered to form part of the Greater London Conurbation, as defined by the Registrar General. In 1965, under the London Government Act 1963, the municipal borough was abolished and its former area transferred to Greater London, to be combined with that of the Municipal Borough of Wanstead and Woodford, and parts of the Municipal Borough of Dagenham and Chigwell Urban District, to form the London Borough of Redbridge.
Outer London is the name for the group of London Boroughs that form a ring around Inner London. These were areas that were not part of the County of London, and became formally part of Greater London in 1965.
