Death of an Interpreter
Marco Antonio Scopinich, interpreter for the Baltimore post office, died at the late hour Tuesday night of congestion of the brain, at his home, 1806 Aisquith Street. Mr. Scopinich was taken ill on Saturday at the post office, and was removed home, but did not recover consciousness.
He was 44 years old and a native of Lussin-Piccolo, Austria. He had been in Baltimore since 1872, when he came here as a captain of an Austrian vessel, and for some time was in the ship-brokerage business. Postmaster Veazey appointed him to the position of interpreter, for which he was eminently qualified. He was an accomplished linguist, speaking English, German, French, Italian, Bohemian and several other languages fluently, and having knowledge of others, which made it impossible for anyone to leave the Baltimore post office without having their business understood and attended to. Besides these accomplishments, Mr. Scopinich was courteous in manner under all circumstances. His knowledge of the Bohemian language was almost invaluable to the office, as many Bohemians are located in this city and have frequent business with the post office.
Mr. Scopinich leaves a widow and five boys, the oldest about ten years of age. Mrs. Scopinich is from Bermuda, and met and married her husband while on a visit to this city. She will probably return to her friends in Bermuda. | SCOPINICH, Capt. Marco Antonio (I4907)

The time-honoured Portland custom of courtship never failed to shock visitors well into the 19th century. Marriage did not traditionally take place until the girl was pregnant. If after faithful courtship no conception followed the couple would part, on the assumption that they were not meant for each other. When pregnancy did occur, the two invariably became man and wife. Portland men were never known to abuse the situation, and infidelity was almost unheard of. Any Kimberlins who took advantage of this 'free love' but who did not honour their duty to marry were stoned out of the Island! Arthur John was born in Hamilton, Bermuda. His father, Ephraim Motyer, born in Bridport, Dorset in 1856, later emigrated and became a building contractor in Bermuda.
After being educated locally, he went to Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada and graduated with a degree in Mathematics. He came to Christ Church in 1909 as a Rhodes Scholar, the first from Bermuda, and read Physics. His education continued at McGill University where he studied electrical engineering.
Arthur John travelled widely. Sailing lists show him leaving Bermuda in 1902, 1905, and 1908 for St. John's, New Brunswick, or Halifax, Nova Scotia, and in 1909, 1911 and 1913 for New York. At the time of the 1911 Canadian Census, he was living in Hamilton, Ontario.
Before the war, he served with the King's Colonial in England for two years, and with the 2nd Dragoon Guards in Canada for a year. He joined up at Quebec on 26 September 1914. Having served in the ranks, he was commissioned with the rank of Lieutenant in the 2nd Brigade Canadian Field Artillery, as a communications expert.
On 22 May 1915 The Royal Gazette, Hamilton published the following:
PRIVATE A. J. MOTYER rumour has been in circulation during the past week, starting as such rumours do, from what source no one knows, to the effect that Private A. J. Motyer had been taken prisoner. is gratifying to know that his parents have by this mail, received a card from him, dated April 25th saying "Quite well". It would spare much pain and anxiety to those with friends at the seat of war if more caution was observed in the repeating of unfounded rumours.
He was killed at Contalmaison on September 15th 1916 whilst helping lay a telephone wire down on top of a wall. When he was shot a man from the Red Cross went up on the wall to rescue him. He, too, was shot and killed. Another man went up and brought down both bodies.

My mum's family tree diagram (drawing), that someone in her family drew up generations ago, clearly shows Shelagh Lynn BENJAMIN as having married a Ken RUSSELL, and that they had 2 daughters: Jade and Holly.
However, Shelagh Lynn BENJAMIN married Kevin P. RUSSELL in April 1969, and we have their marriage certificate. And Jade & Holly both confirmed that their father is Kevin. Kevin's parents were Arnold RUSSELL and Madge SMITH. His siblings were (alphabetically): Damon, Gail, Gary, Guy, Larry, Lester, Lorraine, Paul, and another male (name unknown to us). As far as we know, there was no Ken amongst the siblings.
There is a Kenneth RUSSELL listed on Ancestry.ca, but that tree is protected & not viewable by the public, so I can't see any details about him.
At present (in late 2023), it seems that Kenneth RUSSELL is still around & in the lives of his daughters Jade & Holly, as reported by Ginny from information found by Jackie on Facebook. Supposedly, both Kevin and Ken are either mentioned in the same Facebook conversation, and/or are in the same picture in a Facebook conversation.

Joseph Motyer was a widower from Abbotsbury at the time of his marriage to Israel Keech (who was also a widow).
A death of a Betty Motyer (alias Frances Chickerell) fits as a possible marriage. Burial was 23 Sept 1760.
And a Joseph Motyer who married an Elizabeth Chip in 1742 in Buckland Ripers is another possible marriage.
A Thomas Melmore (born 1711) married Elizabeth Frances (born 1712) in Hammoon, Dorset in 1733. Thomas died 1750.

Ever wonder why you are not losing weight when you're exercising and eating fewer calories? This is a struggle for so many and Laura will clue us in on what we need to know in order to not sabotage ourselves when trying to lose fat.
Laura is a personal trainer, figure coach, and a group exercise instructor at the YMCA. Laura's knowledge about losing body fat and improving your health is extensive and we are so lucky to have her share her insight with us! This is sure to be a wonderful session. Do your best to attend – we are in for a treat.
Also, I failed to include the noon weigh in time on Monday's newsletter. There will still be a weigh-in session at Bluffton Regional Hospital from Noon-2:00. Again, the weigh in times and locations are:
6:30-8:30 am YMCA
Noon-2:00 pm Hospital
4:00-7:00 pm Presbyterian Church
5:30 pm Guest Speaker – Laura Motyer

MOTYER, Margaret "Marny" (née MacKINNON)
Peacefully on December 10, 2004, at Victoria Village Manor, Barrie, in her 83rd year.
Beloved wife of the late John Fletcher MOTYER.
Graduate of Mount Allison University (class of '42) and Toronto General Hospital (class of '46).
She brought comfort through her work as a nurse, and joy with her gift of song.
She will be sorely missed by her 5 children: Emily HARRIS (Grant), and Jenny, Marny, Vicky and John (Carolyn) MOTYER. Loving grandmother of 9 grandchildren.
Marny will also be missed by many other family and Friends. A special thank you to the caring staff at Victoria Village.
Memorial Service to be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 18, 2004, at the Burton Avenue United Church, 37 Burton Avenue, Barrie, Ontario.
