The Isle of Portland is a limestone tied island, 6 kilometres (4 mi) long by 2.4 kilometres (1.5 mi) wide, in the English Channel. Portland is 8 kilometres (5 mi) south of the resort of Weymouth, forming the southernmost point of the county of Dorset, England. A barrier beach over which runs the A354 road connects it to Chesil Beach and the mainland. Portland and Weymouth together form the borough of Weymouth and Portland.
Portland Harbour, in between Portland and Weymouth, is one of the largest man-made harbours in the world. The harbour was made by the building of stone breakwaters between 1848 and 1905. From its inception, it was a Royal Navy base, and played prominent roles during the First and Second World Wars; ships of the Royal Navy and NATO countries worked up and exercised in its waters until 1995.

Portsea Island is a small, flat and low lying island, just off the south coast of England. The island is totally within, and contains a large proportion of, the city of Portsmouth. A small channel, known as Ports Creek, separates the island from the mainland. Three road bridges, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge, and a rail bridge connect the island to the mainland.
Portsmouth is a city located in the county of Hampshire, on the southern coast of England, and is the UK's only island city. It's commonly nicknamed Pompey. Most of the city of Portsmouth lies on Portsea Island, located where the Solent joins the English Channel. This makes Portsmouth the United Kingdom's only island city, and the thirteenth most densely populated place in Europe. It's the second most densely populated place in the UK, after Inner London. The island is separated from the mainland to the north by a narrow creek, bridged in places to make it, in appearance, a peninsula.
