Haplogroup L: If every person living today could trace his or her maternal line back over thousands of generations, all of our lines would meet at a single woman who lived in eastern Africa between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago. Though she was one of perhaps thousands of women alive at the time, only the diverse branches of her haplogroup have survived to today. The story of my maternal line begins with her.
Haplogroup I: Traces back to a woman who likely lived in the Middle East or the Caucasus Mountains about 21,000 years ago. Her descendants appear to have migrated into northern Europe after the Ice Age, and then through southwestern Asia as far as Pakistan with the expansion of agriculture about 8,000 years ago.
Origin and Migrations of Haplogroup I2: Haplogroup I2 is a young offshoot of Haplogroup I, that traces back to a woman who lived between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago. Since her branch split off, women have carried I2 out of Iran and the Middle East, through Anatolia and into Europe. Once in Europe, I2 continued to spread with the booming population growth that came with the introduction of farming to the western reaches of the continent. Today, I2 is predominantly a European haplogroup. It can be found at low levels from Britain, Finland, and northern Europe, across central Europe to Siberia.
