- (Research):John Gush Junior worked as a "Mariner" and "Fisherman" and died aged 42 in 1894, one year after his youngest child Sidney was born. A John Gush "OS"-Ordinary Seaman (18)and from Bridport, was found aboard the Vessel "SURPRISE" (Official Number: 15821) in 1867/1868. This ship spent a lot of time working out of Bridport Harbour, and her crew was made up of many Burton Bradstock men and boys. One of these men was named JOSEPH THORNER (30). The THORNER name comes in through the marriage of Ann Roberts BOUCHER to Abel Absalom BURWOOD. Abel
s brother, Belshazzar, married a woman named Theodosia (nee GARDENER), the wife of Joseph THORNER. Other Burton Bradstock/Bridport crew names were, James & Samuel BISHOP, Joseph GALE the Skipper or MASTER of the SURPRISE, Joseph GEAR-Able Seaman, Thomas MILLS-Mate, Stephen TAPPER-Able Seaman and James WILLIAM-Mate. In 1891, John 39 and a "Fisherman" was living with the following family members at the George Hotel, run by his wife
s stepmother Mary Boucher: wife Elizabeth 36, daughters Jessie 13 & Katherine 7, and sons Edward 5 and baby Herbert 3 months. His father John Gush Senior was also living at the George Hotel.
