Frankston is a city in Victoria , Australia . It is located at the southernmost edge of the Greater Melbourne metropolitan area , near the beginnings of the Mornington Peninsula . Due to its geographical location at the northernmost point of the peninsula, it is often referred to as the "Gateway to the Mornington Peninsula".
Statistically, Frankston is part of Greater Melbourne - which is reflected in its primarily suburban and residential nature. It was absorbed into the Greater Melbourne area by the urban agglomeration of the Melbourne metropolitan area, during the 1980s. The skyline of the Melbourne city centre , located 39 km to the north-west, is clearly visible from the Frankston central business district .
