  (Research):Email from Sue (nee Aplin) Butchers on 01 Apr 2009: I am pretty sure Joan Aplin's middle name was Lily, not Lillian.  Her mother was Lily and she is listed on the ships manifest (the MV "Dumana" as Joan Lily Aplin when the family arrived back from Ceylon in Sept 1925.  At the time Joan was 3 months old, which is why I think she was born in Ceylon (in those days, most families only came back on leave every 4 years or so).  There certainly doesn't seem to be any record of her birth in England.
