    • Death of an Interpreter

Marco Antonio Scopinich, interpreter for the Baltimore post office, died at the late hour Tuesday night of congestion of the brain, at his home, 1806 Aisquith Street.  Mr. Scopinich was taken ill on Saturday at the post office, and was removed home, but did not recover consciousness.

He was 44 years old and a native of Lussin-Piccolo, Austria.  He had been in Baltimore since 1872, when he came here as a captain of an Austrian vessel, and for some time was in the ship-brokerage business.  Postmaster Veazey appointed him to the position of interpreter, for which he was eminently qualified.  He was an accomplished linguist, speaking English, German, French, Italian, Bohemian and several other languages fluently, and having knowledge of others, which made it impossible for anyone to leave the Baltimore post office without having their business understood and attended to.  Besides these accomplishments, Mr. Scopinich was courteous in manner under all circumstances.  His knowledge of the Bohemian language was almost invaluable to the office, as many Bohemians are located in this city and have frequent business with the post office.

Mr. Scopinich leaves a widow and five boys, the oldest about ten years of age.  Mrs. Scopinich is from Bermuda, and met and married her husband while on a visit to this city.  She will probably return to her friends in Bermuda.

    Notes from Leanne Marie COOPER
    • The Royal Gazette (Bermuda) on 1 Dec 1874 supposedly stated incorrect information, as follows:

Miss Lucette Moore COOPER of Bermuda, married Capt. Marco Antonio SCOPINICH of Austria, on 15 Oct 1874, at the residence of her brother, 407 East King Street, Liverpool, Lancashire (now Merseyside), England, by Reverend Thomas B. Barker.

Although the date & address are correct, the correct location was actually Lancaster, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, USA.

  • Notes
    • (Research):The obituary's date in The Royal Gazette, Bermuda, was 12 April 1887, which fell on a Tuesday.

As that Tuesday's issue of the newspaper would've been printed in the morning (or the night before), and as it reads that he died late on a Tuesday night, I am assuming that he died the previous Tuesday (or a Tuesday before that).  The previous Tuesday would make sense, as the wireless hadn't been invented yet at that time, so it would've taken a week or so for the news of his death & funeral to reach Bermuda by ship.

As for the date of the funeral & burial, the obituary mentions that they took place "at 2 o'clock this afternoon".  The ambiguity is, did the news that The Royal Gazette used state that the funeral would be the Tuesday after his death, and therefore be on 12 April 1887 (the date it was published)?  Or was the funeral & burial sometime after his death on 05 April 1887, but before the obituary was printed in The Royal Gazette on 12 April 1887?
