    Life
    • Lucy COOPER, the celebrity, is the oldest sister of Charles Arnold.

She was head-nurse at Women's and Children's hospital in Syracuse, New York.  It's now Crouse Irving Hospital.

She arrived at Arnold's doorstep one day in old age, and lived there until she died.

I was told that Lucy Carlotta was a nurse in WW-I.

It would not surprise me.  A friend of mine married an ELWOOD.  His dad was a young doctor, and his sister was a nurse.  Perhaps his nurse.  At any rate, he knew Lucy COOPER.  And she terrified both he and his sister.

She WAS a force to be reckoned with, believe me.  I knew her when I was a young child.  She died when I was about 16.

She was VERY British.  Very Victorian.  Hated kids.  Alice would drop hers off for the night.  Charles Arnold would go to bed and leave her with Kay and Linda.  My mother never did that.

Lucy did not approve of me or my sister.  We did not wear proper dresses and pinafores.  We wore shorts and Tee Shirts in summer.  It is a pity.  I wish she had liked me and shared her life.  She could have made a big difference.  But, I had to learn about her this way.

She did adore my father.  She always called him little Arnold.  I always wondered why Nan and Pop and Alice called him Junior.  Anyway, it was her plan to send him to college.  He was a bright boy.  But Lucy lost a lot of money in the 1929 Market crash, so that never happened.

She's a celebrity of sorts in Geneva, NY.  She's buried in the Protestant cemetery, and has an above-ground small mausoleum, referred to by Arnold & Nan as "Lucy's Little House".  Lucy was NOT about to have the worms get her!!

It's a big deal in that cemetery.  It's at the top of a hilly road into the cemetery.  The funeral directors tell their drivers: "Take a right or a left at Lucy Cooper".

As she did not live in Geneva until she was quite old, I think few people know who she is, but assume she must be Somebody!  Lucy would like that.  Lucy's Little House.
