She (Elizabeth "Bessie" Patterson HUTCHINGS) was given away by her uncle, A. F. SMITH.
And her mother's maiden name was SMITH (Elmina SMITH).
I thought at first this might be the same A. F. SMITH who founded the office store business of the same name here in Bermuda. However, upon further research, the A. F. SMITH office store here in Bermuda was supposedly founded in 1974 by Anthony F. Smith. | Family: Henry LOCHWARD, III / Elizabeth “Bessie” Patterson HUTCHINGS (F1233)

So many of our ancestors really sacrificed for their families. My grandfather Henry actually worked most of his life as a machinist in the auto industry in Michigan, only getting to visit his family in Towanda occasionally. They would often travel by train to meet him somewhere in Western NY for a picnic. He really didn't live all that long after retiring back to the Towanda farm. He did get to enjoy a few good years, I'm sure, but not to the level of today's retirement style. I was 7 when he died of stroke in the summer of 1954. My memories of him are few.

Stationed in Ceylon (now called Sri Lanka) and while on leave back home, his first wife Lillian died of pneumonia.
His youngest child, Dorothy, was only 18 months old at the time, William Edward was still working out in Ceylon.
In order to have someone to look after the children, William married his wife's older sister (who was then a widow). Can safely say that this must have been something of a marriage of convenience, and she returned to Ceylon with him and the two youngest children.
The boys were farmed out to various relatives. William John (known as Jack) was brought up by Florence Motyer and George Motyer. | APLIN, William Edward (I852)

The 97th (The Earl of Ulster's) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army, formed in 1824 and amalgamated into the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) in 1881. I'm assuming that he was a member of this unit, as I have that he was part of the 97th Regiment, was from Bermuda, and the timeframe fits. | SADLER, Sgt. Michael P. (I4463)
